AB Completed results from a global study on Care of PWHIV/PWA for the
publication of AIDS in the World, Vol.2, will be presented. While entire
populations are included in the study, emphasis will be on the care of
children with AIDS. The presentation will consist of two parts: I.
Delivery systems for the care of PWHIV/PWA. Applying data from
previously unpublished studies, a conceptual model of options for
delivering care to PWHIV/PWA is presented. The model provides a
framework for assessing the value of money of alternative levels of care
(i.e., hospital, home care, or hospice care). Cost-effectiveness data
and other empirical evidence is presented to support decision making
about investment into delivery systems for PWHIV/PWA care. II. The costs
of caring for PWHIV/PWA. Estimates of current and projected costs of
caring for PWHIV/PWA will be presented. A global survey was carried out
to National Programmes on AIDS and non-governmental AIDS programmes to
estimate total national expenditure for the care of PWHIV/PWA in a range
of settings (i.e., hospital, home care, or hospice care). This data is
presented and discussed within the framework of the model presented in
Part I.
